Get Out of College Park!
Climb & Camp along the Potomac River
Date: Saturday, June 16-Sunday, June 17
Location: Carderock, MD & Great Falls, VA
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 14 @ 6 PM
Cost: $60
Join the ORC for a climbing adventure along the Potomac River! The ORC trip leaders will accommodate your skill level whether this is your first time climbing or you are a regular at our Climbing Wall. You’ll spend the first day climbing at Carderock on the Maryland side of the river and the second day climbing at Great Falls on the Virginia side of the river. On Saturday evening, you’ll enjoy a campfire and tent camping at Marsden Tract along the historic C & O Canal Towpath.
Whitewater Rafting the James
Date: Saturday, June 23
Location: Richmond, VA
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, June 21 @ 6 PM
Cost: $45
*Co-Op with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)
Spend the day whitewater rafting on the mighty and historic James River! The James River has rapids up to III+ and is a great trip for both beginners and seasoned rafters. Located just outside of Richmond, the James offers the excitement of urban whitewater and the serenity of local wildlife. Raft guides from VCU will guide us down the James on this weekend adventure.
Stand Up Paddleboard & Kayak Spa Creek
Date: Saturday, July 8
Location: Annapolis, MD
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, July 19 @ 6 PM
Cost: $30
Join us for a day on the water! You’ll be able to try your hand at kayaking and the fast growing sport of stand up paddleboarding (SUP). Spa Creek is the perfect place to enjoy some sunshine and time on the water. At the pre-trip meeting, we will have a basic instructional clinic in the pool with kayaks and SUP’s.
Kayak & Camp Wye Island
Date: Saturday, July 21-Sunday, July 22
Location: Wye Mills, MD

Are you eager to find a peaceful place to paddle? Wye Island on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay is the perfect place to spend the weekend paddling. Coastal kayaking is a relaxing way to travel while enjoying beautiful scenery, viewing wildlife, and making new friends. After a day of paddling you’ll enjoy the sunset over the water, the comforts of a campfire, and be in awe of the star filled sky.
Old Rag Sunrise Hike
Date: Saturday, August 4-Sunday, August 5
Location: Shenandoah National Park, VA
Pre-Trip Meeting: Thursday, August 2 @ 6 PM
Cost: $70
Don’t miss out on this ORC classic! You will scale Old Rag Mountain in the dark hours of the early morning while the rest of the world is still asleep. After some hard hiking and rock scrambling under a starry sky, you’ll be rewarded with a memorable sunrise on the summit of Old Rag and one of the East Coast’s most incredible panoramic views.
Backpacking the AT
Date: Sunday, August 19-Saturday, August 25
Location: Appalachian Trail in Georgia
Pre-Trip Meetings: Tuesday, August 14 & Thursday, August 16 @ 6 PM
Cost: $400 (meals included)
Join the ORC as we embark on our second section hike of the Appalachian Trail. Over the next several years, the ORC will be section hiking the AT in its entirety with the ultimate goal of reaching the Northern Terminus- Mt. Katahdin in Maine. This past spring break, the ORC backpacked from the Southern Terminus, Mt. Springer in Georgia, to Hogspen Gap in Georgia. This August we will continue our adventure at Hogspen Gap and backpack north, crossing the border from Georgia to North Carolina which will complete our first state in this endeavor. No previous backpacking experience is necessary, but you should be in good physical condition. Enjoy a final adventure before fall classes begin!

Nothing here fits your schedule or satisfies your adventure craving? We are happy to design and lead a custom trip just for you! Email Amanda at ameven@umd.edu with preferred dates and activities to start planning your custom adventure. We can offer any of the trips above or create a brand new one. All trips must have 6 or more participants. Prices vary depending on location, trip length, and activity preference.

Important information about registering for trips:
- All UM students, faculty and staff are eligible for our trips and can bring up to one guest
- All pre-trip meetings are MANDATORY and will cover important safety and logistical information. If you don't attend the pre-trip meeting, you can't attend the trip
- All gear, instruction and transportation is included in cost of trip. Meals are not provided, except for the spring break trips.
- Unless otherwise stated, all trips are designed for beginners and people in moderate physical condition
- The Outdoor Recreation Center staff will make every effort to accommodate people with special needs
Cancellation / Refund Policies:
If Campus Recreation Services cancels the trip due to weather, lack of participants, or other circumstances, the participant will receive a full refund. If the participant cancels the registration earlier than 7 days prior to the first day of trip, full refund will be given.
